The Hail Mary of a Protestant

In honor of Mary's Feast of Annunciation, I dedicate this post most especially to our Protestant and Born Again Christian brothers and sisters who view the Blessed Virgin as an obstacle in their relationship with our Lord and Savior. It is my prayer that you will all begin to appreciate Mary's unique role in salvation history even as we differ in our dogmatic beliefs and doctrines. Please read also this article Mary in Islam and Protestantism for a more in-depth view of this subject.

The Hail Mary of a Protestant
(A true story)

A little six-year-old Protestant boy had often heard his Catholic companions reciting the prayer "Hail Mary." He liked it so much that he copied it, memorized it and would recite it every day. "Look, Mommy, what a beautiful prayer," he said to his mother one day.

"Never again say it," answered the mother. "It is a superstitious prayer of Catholics who adore idols and think Mary a goddess. After all, she is a woman like any other. Come on, take this Bible and read it. It contains everything that we are bound to do and have to do." From that day on the little boy discontinued his daily "Hail Mary" and gave himself more time to reading the Bible instead.

One day, while reading the Gospel, he came across the passage about the Annunciation of the Angel to Our Lady. Full of joy, the little boy ran to his mother and said: "Mommy, I have found the 'Hail Mary' in the Bible which says: 'Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women.' Why do you call it a superstitious prayer?"

On another occasion he found that beautiful Salutation of St. Elizabeth to the Virgin Mary and the wonderful canticle MAGNIFICAT in which Mary foretold that "the generations would call her blessed."

He said no more about it to his mother but started to recite the "Hail Mary" every day as before. He felt pleasure in addressing those charming words to the Mother of Jesus, our Savior.

When he was fourteen, he one day heard a discussion on Our Lady among the members of his family. Every one said that Mary was a common woman like any other woman. The boy, after listening to their erroneous reasoning could not bear it any longer, and full of indignation, he interrupted them, saying:

"Mary is not like any other children of Adam, stained with sin. No! The Angel called her FULL OF GRACE AND BLESSED AMONGST WOMEN. Mary is the Mother of Jesus Christ and consequently Mother of God. There is no higher dignity to which a creature can be raised. The Gospel says that the generations will proclaim her blessed and you are trying to despise her and look down on her. Your spirit is not the spirit of the Gospel or of the Bible which you proclaim to be the foundation of the Christian religion."

So deep was the impression which the boy's talk had made that his mother many times cried out sorrowfully: "Oh my God! I fear that this son of mine will one day join the Catholic religion, the religion of Popes!" And indeed, not very long afterwards, having made a serious study of both Protestantism and Catholicism, the boy found the latter to be the only true religion and embraced it and became one of its most ardent apostles.

Some time after his conversion, he met his married sister who rebuked him and said indignantly: "You little know how much I love my children. Should any one of them desire to become a Catholic, I would sooner pierce his heart with a dagger than allow him to embrace the religion of the Popes!"

Her anger and temper were as furious as those of St. Paul before his conversion. However, she would change her ways, just as St. Paul did on his way to Damascus. It so happened that one of her sons fell dangerously ill and the doctors gave up hope of recovery. Her brother then approached her and spoke to her affectionately, saying:

"My dear sister, you naturally wish to have your child cured. Very well, then, do what I ask you to do. Follow me, let us pray one 'Hail Mary' and promise God that, if your son recovers his health, you would seriously study the Catholic doctrine, and should you come to the conclusion that Catholicism is the only true religion, you would embrace it no matter what the sacrifices may be."

His sister was somewhat reluctant at the beginning, but as she wished for her son's recovery, she accepted her brother's proposal and recited the "Hail Mary" together with him. The next day her son was completely cured. The mother fulfilled her promise and she studied the Catholic doctrine. After long preparation she received Baptism together with her whole family, thanking her brother for being an apostle to her.

The story was related during a sermon given by the Rev. Fr. Tuckwell. "Brethren," he went on and said, "the boy who became a Catholic and converted his sister to Catholicism dedicated his whole life to the service of God. He is the priest who is speaking to you now! What I am I owe to Our Lady. You, too, my dear brethren, be entirely dedicated also to Our Lady and never let a day pass without saying the beautiful prayer, 'Hail Mary', and your Rosary. Ask her to enlighten the minds of Protestants who are separated from the true Church of Christ founded on the Rock (Peter) and 'against whom the gates of hell shall never prevail.'"

Patronage of St. Joseph

Once again, we celebrate today the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. May we all be inspired to have a special devotion to him as our powerful intercessor and protector before God. This post is an excerpt from the book Saint Joseph As Seen by Mystics and Historians.

"I have been informed concerning certain other privileges conferred upon Saint Joseph by the Most High on account of his great holiness, which are especially important to those who ask his intercession in a proper manner.

In virtue of these special privileges, the intercession of Saint Joseph is most powerful; first, for attaining the virtue of purity and overcoming the sensual inclinations of the flesh; secondly, for procuring powerful help to escape sin and return to the friendship of God; thirdly, for increasing the love and devotion to most holy Mary; fourthly, for securing the grace of a happy death and protection against the demons in that hour; fifthly, for inspiring the demons with terror at the mere mention of his name by his clients; sixthly, for gaining health of body and assistance in all kinds of difficulties; seventhly, for securing issue of children in families.

I beseech all the faithful children of the Church to be very devout to him, and they will experience these favors in reality, if they dispose themselves as they should, in order to receive and merit them."

- Venerable Maria de Agreda

"To gain a favorable hearing with our Lord, I took Saint Joseph as advocate and protector and prayed very specially to him. His help was most strikingly shown. As a tender spiritual father and a loving protector, he quickly cured me of my sickness (while still so young, she was seriously paralysed) just as he had saved me from greater dangers of other sorts which were menacing my honor and my eternal salvation.

In his eagerness to make me happy, he has always answered my prayers far beyond my expectations. To this very day, I do not remember ever having asked him anything that he did not give me. What a picture I would have before my eyes if I could recall all the signal graces which God gave me, and all the dangers, bodily and spiritual, from which he delivered me through the intercession of this good saint. To the other saints, God gives the grace to help us in certain particular needs, but to Saint Joseph, I know by experience, He gives power to help us in all our needs.

Our Lord wants us to understand that just as He was obedient in this land of exile, recognizing in Joseph the authority of a foster-father and a master, so now He is happy to do his will in Heaven by listening to all his demands. Other persons whom I advised to pray to this incomparable protector have agreed with me: the number of his clients is growing and every day the happy effects of his mediation confirm my words.

Knowing now, by long experience, Joseph's power with God, I would like to persuade everyone to pray to him. I have seen persons with a real solid devotion to him progress steadily in virtue, for he helps in a very striking manner those who pray for help along the path of perfection.

I dare the skeptics to try praying to Saint Joseph, and they will see by experience the advantage of praying to this great Patriarch and honoring him with a special devotion."

- St. Teresa of Avila

Once, on the Feast of the Annunciation, St. Gertrude had a vision during which the Heavenly Mother revealed to her the glory of Her spouse, St. Joseph, in order to awaken in the saint a greater love for him and to encourage her to have confidence in his intercession. Of this vision, St Gertrude wrote:

"I saw Heaven opened and Saint Joseph sitting upon a magnificent throne. I felt myself wonderfully affected when, each time his name was mentioned, all the saints made a profound inclination toward him, showing by the serenity and sweetness of their looks that they rejoiced with him on account of his exalted dignity."

-oOo-

St. Alphonsus Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorists, burned with love for the Blessed Sacrament and for Mary, the Mother of Jesus, but he also inculcated into the hearts of his listeners a great confidence in the patronage of St. Joseph. He taught that the whole world acknowledges St. Joseph as the advocate of the dying, and this for three reasons; first, because being loved by Jesus not only as a friend but as a father, he possesses in Heaven a power of intercession greater than that of other saints; second, because he has special power over the demons who attack us on our deathbed, this privilege having been given him in recompense for the fact that he preserved the life of Jesus from the impious designs of Herod; and third, because of the assistance rendered him by Jesus and Mary at the hour of his death. In consequence, St. Joseph has received the privilege of obtaining for his devout clients, the inestimable grace of a holy and peaceful death in the sight of the Lord.

-oOo-

The Angelic Doctor, Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches, that God has been pleased to give some saints a special power to protect under certain peculiar necessities, and others He has endowed with gifts of various kinds; but to Saint Joseph He has been more generous - He has made him, as it were, His plenipotentiary, His treasurer-general, that he may have it in his power to assist and relieve every description of person, whatever may be his necessity.

The other saints, it is true, have great power, but only to a certain extent. They intercede and supplicate as dependants, but they do not rule as masters; whereas, St. Joseph, to whom at Nazareth Jesus and Mary had lived submissive, as being the father of One and husband to the Other, now that he dwells in the House of God, where his titles, far from being obscured, shine out with incomparable brilliancy, may doubtless obtain all he desires from the King, his Son, and the Queen, his Spouse. His influence with Both is unbounded, and as Gerson says, "he rather commands than supplicates. Hence it may be seen, how powerful is the intercession of St. Joseph!"

-oOo-

St. Francis de Sales assures us, that St. Joseph's purity surpassed that of the angels of the first hierarchy; for, as he says, if the material sun can perfect the dazzling whiteness of the lily in a few days, who can conceive the admirable degree of perfection to which St. Joseph's purity was raised, when it was exposed, not for a few days only, but for the space of 30 years, to the rays of the Sun of Justice and of the Mystical Moon, which derived from that Sun all Her splendor?

-oOo-

As the sentence of death has been pronounced on all, without exception, it follows that all and each, without exception, should endeavor to secure the interest and friendship of him who is all-powerful in procuring every assistance for his clients at that awful and decisive hour, to enable them to die happily. If a person engages in a lawsuit, on the event of which depends an immense gain or utter ruin, does he not call in the aid of some eminent lawyer, of one whose zeal for his interest he may safely depend?

Now every Christian at the hour of death, is about to hear an irrevocable sentence pronounced upon him, upon which will depend his eternal life or death, the rage and temptations of the devil at that critical moment - the remembrance of past sins - the uncertainty as to the real state of one's soul at that awful moment - the terror of the future - all combine in disputing, as it were, his claim to the Kingdom of Heaven, and in torturing his spirit with the dread apprehension of being condemned to the eternal loss of that God, Who loved him even so well as to die for him, Who alone can make him happy - to that Hell of fire where the worm dieth not, and the fire is never extinguished!

Why not, at that critical moment, call on some saint to plead his cause, and to obtain a favorable sentence for him at that awful tribunal, whence there is no appeal, should he once have the misfortune to be condemned? Who is there better qualified to perform this charitable office than Saint Joseph? He is acknowledged by all Christendom to be the special advocate of dying Christians; whence it is that congregations have been everywhere established and altars raised in his name, and that the feast of his blessed death is celebrated in many places.

St. Joseph Speaks:

"I bring to souls, the purity of my life and the obedience that crowned it.

"All fatherhood is blest in me whom the Eternal Father chose as His representative on earth, the Virgin-Father of His Own Divine Son. Through me, the Heavenly Father has blessed all fatherhood, and through me He continues, and will continue, to do so till the end of time. My spiritual fatherhood extends to all God's children, and together with my Virgin Spouse, I watch over them with great love and solicitude.

"Fathers must come to me to learn obedience to authority: to the Church always, as the mouthpiece of God, to the laws of the country in which they live, insofar as these do not go against God and their neighbor. Mine was perfect obedience to the divine will, as it was shown and made known to me by the Jewish law and religion. To be careless in this is most displeasing to God and will be severely punished in the next world.

"Let fathers also imitate my great purity of life and the deep respect I held for my Immaculate Spouse. Let them be an example to their children and fellowmen, never willfully doing anything that would cause scandal among God's people. Fatherhood is from God, and it must take, once again, its rightful place among men.

"I desire souls to come to my heart that they may learn true union with the divine will.

"God wishes me to be honored in union with Jesus and Mary to obtain peace among men and nations.

"The privilege of being chosen by God to be the Virgin-Father of His Son was mine alone, and no honor, excluding that bestowed upon my Holy Spouse, was ever or will ever be as sublime or as high as this. I desire that a day be set aside to honor my fatherhood. The Holy Trinity desires thus to honor me, that in my unique fatherhood, all fatherhood might be blessed."

Courage Philippines Daet/Legazpi Chapters

Good news to our brothers and sisters in Daet, Camarines Norte and Legazpi, Albay! We have just established local Courage chapters in those places through the efforts of Bishop Gilbert Garcera  of Daet, Bishop Joel Baylon of Legazpi, and Bro. Rollie. This is our first provincial chapters outside of Manila and we hope and pray that more Church leaders will take the initiative to introduce our ministry to their respective localities.

Dear brothers and sisters,

I have just accomplished my mission in Daet, Camarines Norte.

The good bishop, Most Rev. Gilbert Garcera, has agreed to take leadership in the establishment of Courage Daet chapter, with himself as the interim spiritual director. He has appointed a point contact person for this endeavor. I have also met with the first four (4) interested members of the group: F_, N_, B_ and O_. (names withheld for anonymity)

From these four (4) persons will come others who may express desire to be helped in building a chaste life, and in April 2014, we are being invited by the bishop, particularly those who have their origins here in Daet, to come and meet them in a private group discussion where we would already introduce to them how to conduct a support group sharing meeting. I am hoping that we would respond generously to the bishop's request and find time to come here in Daet, Camarines Norte.

Bro. Rollie

Update:

I am pleased to inform you that we have finalized the establishment of Courage chapters in two (2) areas of the Bicol region - Daet, Camarines Norte under Bishop Gilbert Garcera and Legazpi, Albay under Bishop Joel Baylon.

In line with this, I have just spoken to Bishop Garcera and he is willing to host Courage Manila and to include initial members from Daet and Legazpi to the following upcoming activities:

* April 13 (Palm Sunday) - evening Courage orientation and fellowship

* April 14 (Holy Monday) - whole day Courage workshop (code of conduct and how to run a sharing meeting)

* April 15 (Holy Tuesday) - whole day Courage Lenten Recollection (for Manila, Daet and Legazpi - with Bishop Gilbert as recollection master)

Please pray for these activities to be well-attended and to be a success.

Every February, we celebrate Pro-life month, and for this February, we have invited renowned speaker Michael Voris of ChurchMilitant.TV. A Call to Defend Life

Shared from my Facebook wall.

PLEASE READ AND SHARE!

January 15, 2014

Dear Friends,

Peace be with you!

Once again, we are called upon to fulfill our sacred duty to defend life, and the day and the place is the 7th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights (APCRSHR) to be held at Philippine International Convention Center on January 21-24, 2014. Close to a hundred NGOs are participating in this conference, and on this day, we will hold a prayer rally and be seen and heard so that we may be voices of the unborn, the poor, and the weak, in the early morning of January 21, 8:00 am - 10:00 am.

We all know that Reproductive Health is a misnomer; it pays lip service to pregnant women, that they may remain healthy during their pregnancy, and neither does it promote good health. It is quite unfortunate that the only choice they give is a choice between what contraceptive or family planning method women want to avail of, where we should be empowering women through education, skills training, and job opportunities that lead to better choices in life.

The event is a three-day conference that will talk about the different aspects of Reproductive Health, and the anti-life camp has spared no expense in inviting foreign delegation to speak in this conference. Close to half of their topics include the youth and how to educate them using anti-life teachings and doctrines. Attached below is a list of topics and satellite sessions concerning the youth, which includes also a topic about abortion. More than mobilizing ourselves here and there, we also need to double our efforts to reach out to the young and teach them the beauty and sanctity of life.

It should also be noted that this year is the Year of the Laity, and this February we will be celebrating Pro-Life Month with the theme: Year of the Laity, Year of LifeHand in Hand Towards a Pro-Life Nation. Our protest and prayer rally is the perfect time to manifest our pro-life zeal and fervor. Please be there and be counted! You may bring pro-life placards, posters, tarps, and t-shirts too.

May God bless us and all our efforts to defend the sacredness of life in all its stages! Mabuhay!

Sincerely,
Eric Manalang
President

Key Facts About Homosexuality

This is from a forwarded e-mail by Bishop B. Pabillo. This post simply presents the facts you ought to know about the hot button topic of homosexuality as there is certainly a lot of confusion out there. It's basically SSA in a nutshell. Credit also goes to Primacy of Reason blog

1. Same-sex attraction is not the same as homosexual behavior.

1.1 Same-sex attraction (SSA) is usually not a choice, but a result of multiple factors.

1.2. Homosexual behavior - this is a choice, because 50% of people who performed homosexual actions before age 15 never did it again.

1.3. Homosexual self-identification - a choice of what to label oneself. (Source: Samesexattraction.org, FRC, Top Ten Myths )

2. Homosexuality is not genetic.

2.1 Researchers Bearman and Brückner of Columbia and Yale University found in 2002 that among male identical twins (who both have the same genetic code) only 6.7% are both gay, and only 5.3% among females. Compare this with 98% of identical twins who have the same eye color, showing that eye color is determined by genes, but not homosexuality.

2.2 Another study of 2000 shows only 11% of identical twins are gays. (Bailey et. al)

3. Same-sex attraction has multiple causes.

3.1. Sadness and loneliness due to father and child relationship characterized by abandonment, hostility or disinterest.

3.2. Weak masculine identity and loneliness due to lack of male peer acceptance due to inability to play team sports.

3.3. Mother perceived as domineering, overly demanding.

3.4. Sexually abused.

3.5. Traumatized by important males (for females).

3.6. Failure to identify and have friendships with same-sex peers.

3.7 Separation from parent during critical time of development.

3.8 Narcissism and profound selfishness

(Sources: Homosexuality and Hope, People can change self-survey)

4. Psychiatric disorders are far more common among people with same-sex attraction.

Recent research has shown that depression, anxiety disorders, suicidal ideas, & conduct disorder are prevalent among them. (HH)

5. Homosexual unions have negative implications:

5.1. Short-lived. Married people in the US stay together for an average of 9.8 years, cohabiting 1.7, gays 3.5, lesbians 2.2.

5.2. Health hazard. ‘Coupled’ homosexuals are more apt than ‘single’ gays to engage in highly risky, unsanitary sex, resulting in AIDS, hepatitis, etc. More than 50% of all new HIV infections occur in gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM).

5.3. Highest rate of domestic violence. In marriage, the average rate of domestic violence is less than 5% a year. Unmarried report 20% to 25%. Lesbians couples 48 -58%, and gays 29-39%.

5.4. Homosexuals make poor parents. 0.6% children with non-homosexual parents reported sex with their parents or stepparents. For children with gay parents, 50% of sons reported sex with their father and 18% of daughters reported sex with a stepmother. Children of gays scored lowest in math and language skills, were least popular. (Source: Family Research Council, Getting the Facts: Same-Sex Marriage; amFAR.on spread of AIDS)

6. Bible: Acts are “an abomination” (extremely disgusting and hateful), “dishonorable, unnatural”.

6.1. If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. ( Lev. 20:13) “Abomination” means an extremely disgusting and hateful thing. (Merriam-Webster)

6.2 God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural… men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error. ( Romans 1:26-28)

6.3 Fornicators, adulterers, sodomites [homosexuals]...- none of these will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor 6:9-10)

7. Catholic Teaching: A disorder and a trial. Homosexual persons are accepted with compassion.

7.1 Homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. They close the sexual act to the gift of life and do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity.

7.2 This inclination constitutes a trial for most of those who have these tendencies. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Avoid any sign of unjust discrimination. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

7.3. Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. (CCC 2357-9)

8. Therapy: Resolving emotional pain through forgiveness and training in chastity

8.1. Healing of homosexual attractions and behavior: Key to recovery is admitting powerlessness, learning to forgive, and an intimate, loving friendship with Christ. “Only God's love is powerful enough to overcome the painful loneliness and sadness.” (http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/homosexuality/ho0011.html)

Note:  This year's Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on the Second Sunday of Advent. Because of the precedence of the Second Sunday of Advent, the liturgical celebration for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception will be moved to Dec. 9, 2013, Monday. Please note that the faithful who will go to Mass on December 8 already fulfills his/her holy day of obligation for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception although everyone is still encouraged to attend the said feast.
